  • Westgate

Service Description

Defensive dog handling is a proactive combination of practical skills and knowledge that focuses on helping to prevent, mitigate or intervene in confrontational behaviour between dogs. This course will walk you through a picture driven story narrative that will equip you with the means and confidence to protect yourselves when random unexpected dog encounters happen while out in the community, for whatever reason. The course consists of 2 sessions which will be held over consecutive weekends What this course will cover: • Applied theoretical knowledge. o How dogs learn and communicate. o Fear, anxiety, and stress. o Recognising precursors for fear, stress and aggression in your own dog or the roaming Ralph/Rosie. o Applied comprehension of the knowledge learned. • Practical handling skills o Effective use of reward driven tools. o Advanced leash handling. o Practical defensive handling techniques. o Practical environmental awareness practice. o Improvised emergency equipment concepts and use. o Safely breaking up dog fights minimizing further damage. What this course is not: A substitute for professional behavioural consultation nor training but is an aid for you to understand how these things happen in the first place and what you can do if something does happen to you. Attendee dog participation To help conceptualise the materials covered there will a minimum of 2 opportunities (with a possibility for more depending on participating numbers) for your own dogs to attend the practical portion on the course and assist in highlighting what you have learned. Attending dogs must be able to cope with working in new environments, around new people, and dogs. Therefore, those interested parties will be required to undertake a training skills assessment to ensure your dog will be able to best display the exercises that we will cover. Compulsory dog requirements • Up-to-date council registration • Sighted proof of vaccinations • Food & toy driven. You can file your interest by filling out the pre-assessment form at the link below: https://forms.gle/GHyiE79X192F1VCGA Should your dog be unable to manage you may be asked to crate/remove your dog for the session, so please only apply if you are confident your dog will be able to manage the environment.
